You order a “double bed sheet” online, and it either barely covers the mattress or hangs to the floor on one side. The problem isn’t you. Indian bed sizes aren’t fully standardised, and listings use “double”, “queen” and “king” loosely.

This guide helps you measure once, understand the common sizes, and pick the right sheet every time.

Quick answer

Measure your mattress (width, length and thickness) before you buy. Common Indian mattress sizes are about 36 x 72 to 75 inches (single), 48 x 72 to 75 (double), 60 x 75 to 80 (queen) and 72 x 75 to 84 (king).

For a flat sheet, add roughly 2 to 2.5 feet to the width and length so it tucks in. For a fitted sheet, match the mattress size and check the pocket depth against your mattress thickness.

Step 1: Measure your mattress, not the bed frame

The bed frame is usually bigger than the mattress. Sheets need to fit the mattress.

  1. Width: side to side across the top.
  2. Length: head to foot.
  3. Thickness (height): from the bottom edge to the top. Most Indian mattresses are somewhere between 5 and 10 inches thick, and toppers add more.

Write it down as width x length x thickness, for example 72 x 75 x 6 inches.

Common mattress sizes in India

Sizes vary between mattress brands, so use this as a guide and check your own measurement.

Bed sizeTypical mattress size (inches)Approx. in feet
Single36 x 72 to 753 x 6 to 6.25
Double48 x 72 to 754 x 6 to 6.25
Queen60 x 75 to 805 x 6.25 to 6.67
King72 x 75 to 846 x 6.25 to 7

Why “double” is confusing in India: many sellers call any sheet for a two-person bed a “double bed sheet”, even when it’s sized for a queen or king mattress. Always check the actual measurements in the listing, not just the name.

Flat sheet vs fitted sheet

Flat sheet: a plain rectangle that you tuck in. This is the most common type in Indian homes. It’s forgiving if your mattress is a slightly odd size.

Fitted sheet: has elastic corners that wrap around the mattress. It stays neat and doesn’t come loose, which is great for kids’ beds and people who move a lot in sleep. But it must match your mattress size and thickness closely.

Which sheet size fits your bed

Typical sheet sizes sold for each bed size (in inches). Brands vary, so compare with your mattress.

BedFitted sheet (W x L)Flat sheet (W x L)Pillow cover
Single36 x 72 to 75about 60 to 66 x 9017 x 27 or 18 x 28
Double48 x 72 to 75about 78 x 9817 x 27 or 18 x 28
Queen60 x 78 to 80about 90 x 10017 x 27 or 18 x 28
King72 x 78about 100 to 108 x 10817 x 27 or 18 x 28

The simple rule for flat sheets

Add about 24 to 30 inches to both the width and the length of your mattress. That gives enough to tuck in on all sides of a normal-thickness mattress. Thick mattresses or toppers need a little more.

Example: a 72 x 75 inch king mattress needs a flat sheet of roughly 100 x 100 inches or more. A sheet labelled 90 x 100 will cover it but won’t tuck in well on the sides.

For fitted sheets, check the pocket depth

The “pocket” is how deep the elastic corner goes. It should be at least as deep as your mattress plus topper. If your mattress is 8 inches thick and the sheet’s pocket is 6 inches, it’ll keep popping off the corners.

Thread count: what it means and how much matters

Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. Higher can feel smoother, but it’s not the full story.

  • Around 140 to 200: basic cotton sheets. Fine for daily use, very breathable.
  • Around 200 to 400: where most good-quality cotton sheets sit. A good balance of softness, breathability and price for Indian weather.
  • Very high numbers (800 and above): often use multi-ply threads to inflate the number. They can feel heavier and warmer, and the price jump isn’t always worth it.

Fibre quality and weave matter as much as thread count. A well-made 250 thread count cotton sheet can feel better than a cheap 1000 thread count one.

Fabric and weave for Indian weather

Fabric / weaveFeelsBest for
Cotton percaleCrisp, cool, matteHot and humid weather, people who sleep warm
Cotton sateenSmooth, slightly shiny, a bit warmerAir-conditioned rooms, cooler months
Polycotton or microfibreSoft, wrinkle-resistant, cheaperBudget buys, guest rooms; can feel warm
Flannel or brushed cottonWarm, fuzzyNorth Indian winters
LinenCool, textured, gets softer with washingVery hot weather, if your budget allows

For most of India, 100% cotton is the most comfortable choice for most of the year.

Quick checks before you buy online

  • Read the actual size in inches or cm, not just “double” or “king”.
  • Check if it’s flat or fitted, and the pocket depth for fitted sheets.
  • Check the number of pillow covers included and their size.
  • Look for “100% cotton” in the material line if you want cotton. “Cotton feel” or “cotton rich” usually means a blend.
  • Expect some shrinkage with pure cotton after the first wash. Buying slightly larger helps.
  • Look at customer photos for the real colour.

Care tips so sheets last longer

  • Wash new sheets before first use to remove finishing chemicals and excess dye.
  • Use mild detergent and cold or lukewarm water.
  • Dry dark colours in shade to prevent fading in the strong Indian sun.
  • Rotate between two or three sets so each set lasts longer.

Who can skip buying new sheets

  • If your current sheets fit, feel comfortable and aren’t thin or torn, there’s no need to upgrade just for a higher thread count.
  • If only your pillow covers are worn out, many brands sell them separately.

If you do need new sheets, these two match the sizes in this guide. Both are 100% cotton, according to their Amazon.in listings (checked 31 Oct 2026).

Urban Jaipur 100% Cotton Bedsheet (90 x 108 inches, 210 TC): a flat sheet for a double or queen bed

What it is: A 100% cotton printed flat sheet, 90 x 108 inches, 210 thread count, sold with 2 pillow covers.

Why we picked it: At 90 inches wide it leaves room to tuck in on a double or queen mattress (48 to 60 inches wide in our size table). It has 4.0 stars from 920 ratings on Amazon.in.

Limitation: It is a floral print, and a flat sheet needs tucking in each time you make the bed.

Best for: Double or queen beds, if you like a classic tucked-in sheet. Skip if: You want a sheet that stays in place on its own; a fitted sheet is easier.

Price: ₹664 for one sheet with 2 pillow covers on Amazon.in (price checked on 31 Oct 2026). Prices change, so check the current price.

Trance Home Linen 100% Cotton Fitted Sheet, King (78 x 72 inches, 144 TC)

What it is: An elasticated fitted sheet in 100% cotton, 144 thread count, for a 78 x 72 inch king mattress, sold with 2 pillow covers.

Why we picked it: It matches the 72 x 78 inch king mattress size in this guide, and a fitted sheet stays in place without tucking. It has 4.1 stars from 941 ratings on Amazon.in.

Limitation: The listing title does not give the pocket depth, so check it against your mattress thickness before you buy, as this guide suggests. At 144 TC it is a lighter weave than the Urban Jaipur sheet.

Best for: A standard 72 x 78 inch king mattress. Skip if: Your mattress is 72 x 84 inches or extra thick.

Price: ₹870 for one fitted sheet with 2 pillow covers on Amazon.in (price checked on 31 Oct 2026). Prices change, so check the current price.

Final verdict

Measure your mattress first, then buy by measurements, not by the label. For a flat sheet, add about 2 to 2.5 feet to the mattress width and length. For a fitted sheet, match the size and check the pocket depth. For Indian weather, a 200 to 400 thread count cotton percale or sateen is the best value for most homes.

A king size mattress in India is usually about 72 inches wide and 75 to 84 inches long (around 6 x 6.25 to 7 feet). Sizes vary by brand, so measure your mattress.

What size bedsheet do I need for a 6×6 bed?
