The invite arrives. Then the WhatsApp group lists five functions: haldi, mehendi, sangeet, the wedding and a reception. Suddenly you need five looks, and you have one kurta and a suit that fit you two years ago.

You don’t need a new outfit for every event. Most male guests can cover a full Indian wedding with two or three good pieces and some smart mixing. This guide shows you how.

Quick answer

Wear a light cotton kurta for haldi and mehendi, a brighter kurta or kurta with a Nehru jacket for the sangeet, a silk-blend kurta set or bandhgala for the main wedding, and a suit or a jacket with trousers for the reception.

Ask the family about any colour theme, avoid outshining the groom, and pick fabrics that suit the weather and the venue.

Start with the dress code (and just ask)

Indian weddings vary a lot by region, community and family. A South Indian temple wedding, a Punjabi sangeet and a destination wedding in Goa all have different expectations. Before you buy anything:

  • Check the invite or the wedding group for a colour theme for each function. Many families now set one.
  • Ask whether the wedding is traditional, festive or western for the reception.
  • Check if it’s outdoors or indoors, day or night. This decides your fabric.

Asking one cousin or the couple’s friend saves you money and an awkward evening.

Haldi

Keep it simple and washable. Haldi is usually a daytime event with turmeric paste flying around, so don’t wear anything you’d be upset to stain. A plain cotton kurta in yellow or white is the safe choice.

Mehendi

Mehendi is relaxed and colourful. A printed kurta works well. If the family is modern, a short kurta over jeans or chinos is usually fine. Pastels photograph well in daylight.

Sangeet

This is where you can have fun. A kurta with a Nehru jacket is the most useful buy for most guests, because you can reuse the jacket with other kurtas and even with a shirt and trousers. Pick something you can dance in.

The wedding ceremony

This is the most formal traditional event. A silk-blend kurta set or a kurta with a jacket is right for most guests. A full sherwani is usually worn by the groom and very close family, so as a guest, keep it a level below the groom. For fabric choices, our kurta buying guide for Diwali and Durga Puja explains cotton, cotton-silk and silk in plain words.

The reception

Receptions are often western or Indo-western. A well-fitting suit or a blazer with trousers is the safest choice. Fit matters more than price: a ₹6,000 suit that fits beats a ₹20,000 one that hangs off your shoulders.

Colours: what to wear and what to avoid

  • Follow the theme if there is one. It matters more than any general rule.
  • Avoid copying the groom. If you know his colour, pick something different.
  • White and black: in many Indian families white is linked to mourning, and some avoid black at ceremonies. Others don’t mind at all. If you’re unsure, ask, or pick another colour.
  • Red: traditionally the bride’s colour in many communities. Men can wear maroon or deep red, but avoid matching the bride’s outfit.
  • Safe all-rounders: navy, maroon, bottle green, rust, mustard, beige and pastels.

Pick fabric for the weather

Wedding season in India runs mostly from November to February, but the weather is very different across the country.

  • North India in winter (Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan nights): heavier silk blends, velvet or wool-blend jackets, and a shawl for outdoor evenings.
  • South and West India (Chennai, Mumbai, Goa): light cotton, linen blends and breathable cotton-silk. Avoid heavy brocade outdoors in the day.
  • Outdoor day events: light colours and natural fabrics keep you cooler.
  • Indoor, air-conditioned halls: heavier fabrics and jackets are fine.

The smart way to dress for 4 to 5 functions on a budget

You can cover most weddings with three pieces:

  1. One plain kurta set (cream, beige or pastel) for haldi and mehendi.
  2. One Nehru jacket in a rich colour that goes on top of the plain kurta for the sangeet, and over a shirt for other events.
  3. One festive kurta set or a suit, depending on whether the main wedding or the reception matters more to you.

Mix them across functions, and change the look with a pocket square, a stole or different footwear. People remember a good fit and a neat look far more than whether you repeated a kurta.

Footwear and accessories

  • With kurtas and sherwanis: mojaris, juttis or leather kolhapuris. Make sure they’re comfortable for standing and dancing.
  • With suits: a pair of plain black or brown leather oxfords or derbies. Our guide to the best formal shoes for men in India compares options for weddings and office use.
  • Watch: a simple analog watch with a leather or metal strap works with both Indian and western outfits. See our watches for men under ₹5,000 if you need one.
  • Extras: a pocket square for the suit, a stole or shawl for winter evenings, and a small deodorant and comb for long days.

Fit checks before the big day

  • Kurta length: usually around mid-thigh to just above the knee for a classic look. Shorter kurtas are more casual.
  • Shoulders: the seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder.
  • Sleeves: should end at the wrist bone, so your watch shows a little.
  • Churidar or pyjama: churidars should bunch slightly at the ankle, not drag on the floor.
  • Try everything on a week before, with the shoes you’ll wear. Alterations take time in wedding season.

Renting vs buying

If you need a sherwani or a designer bandhgala for one wedding, renting can make sense. Rental stores and online rental services are common in big cities. Buying makes sense for pieces you’ll wear again: a plain kurta set, a Nehru jacket and a suit.

Who should skip buying new

  • If you already own one good kurta and a suit that fits, you may only need a Nehru jacket or a new pocket square.
  • If you’re attending only the reception, a suit or blazer you already own is usually enough.
  • Don’t buy an expensive outfit in a trend colour you won’t wear again.

Before you buy online

  • Check the size chart for that brand. Kurta sizes vary a lot between brands.
  • Read the fabric line carefully: “silk look” or “art silk” is not pure silk.
  • Check the return or exchange policy, and order at least 2 weeks before the wedding so you have time for exchanges and alterations.

Final verdict

As a male wedding guest in India, you don’t need a new outfit for every function. Ask about the colour theme, keep it a level below the groom, choose fabrics for the weather, and build your looks around a plain kurta set, a Nehru jacket and either a festive kurta set or a well-fitting suit. Fit and neatness matter more than price.

Frequently asked questions

What should a man wear to an Indian wedding as a guest?

For the wedding ceremony, a silk-blend kurta set, a kurta with a Nehru jacket or a bandhgala works for most male guests. For the reception, a suit or blazer with trousers is usually right. Check with the family for any colour theme.

Can I wear a suit to an Indian wedding?

Yes, especially for the reception or a cocktail evening. For the main ceremony, many families prefer Indian wear, so a kurta set or bandhgala is the safer choice.

Can a male guest wear black or white to an Indian wedding?

It depends on the family. Some avoid white because it is linked to mourning, and some avoid black at ceremonies. Many modern families do not mind. If you are unsure, ask or choose another colour.

What should I wear to a haldi ceremony?

A simple cotton kurta in yellow, white or cream is the safest choice. Turmeric paste can stain clothes, so avoid anything expensive or delicate.

How many outfits do I need for a 3-day Indian wedding?

Usually two or three pieces are enough if you mix them: a plain kurta set, a Nehru jacket and either a festive kurta set or a suit. Change accessories and footwear to vary the look.

Should I rent or buy a sherwani as a guest?

Most guests do not need a sherwani. If you are close family and need one for a single event, renting can make sense. Buy pieces you will wear again.
